IMPHAL, Jun 20: Poor drainage system at Konung Mamang, Imphal has caused inconvenience to locals, shopkeepers and commuters.
Rain or no rain, the road near Konung Mamang traffic point is flooded most of the time due to seepage of water from the drain.
The flooding, which is worst during and after rainfall, coupled with potholes has compounded the woes of the locals and commuters.
Half the road being submerged under water is causing traffic congestion in one of the busiest places in Imphal.
Speaking to this paper, Pureiromba Youth Club president W Ningthem said there is flooding in the area most of the time even when it is not raining due to poor drainage system.
The situation is not new. It is the worst during the rainy season. However, the Government and the relevant department has not taken up any measures yet despite assurance to address the problem, he said.
Even though the road is wide enough, it has been narrowed down by the flooding. Most of the time, half the road is submerged under water, and people don't want to drive through the water due to fear of hitting large potholes. This has caused traffic congestion and inconvenienced the locals and commuters alike, Ningthem said.
The flooding will worsen during the rainy season. The Government and the department concerned must take up appropriate measures to address the problem, he said.
Ningthem said the relevant authorities must begin repairing the road and the drainage within 5 days. If no visible action is taken up, the locals may launch agitation, including blocking the road, he added.
