UKHRUL, Jun 20 :
A Naga truck driver from Meluri, Nagaland, was rescued on Friday night at Malom, Manipur, by locals and handed over to a team of the Native People’s Committee Manipur (NPCM).
According to Ashang Kasar, convener of the NPCM, the individual has been identified as Luchiko, son of Apuha from Meluri, under Phek, Nagaland. He was travelling to Churachandpur on Friday night as the second driver of a truck reportedly driven by a Muslim man identified as Ashu. The truck bears registration number AS 01 DC XXXX.
They were transporting steel rolls to Churachandpur when, fearing for his life, Luchiko escaped at the Malom oil depot. He was subsequently picked up by local youths at around 11.30 pm and handed over to local Meira Paibis (women torchbearers). The women’s group provided him shelter and later handed him over to the NPCM.
The committee, led by Ashang Kasar, has contacted his family in Nagaland and is arranging for his safe return to his hometown in Meluri. The NPCM has handed him over to Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Imphal (TKLI), after which the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong will facilitate his return to the family. The truck driver, identified as Ashu, is reportedly still absconding. Ukhrul Times
