IMPHAL, Jun 21 : Even as CoTU and other Kuki organisations have imposed an emergency shut- down on all Naitonal Highways against what it alleges is selective operations conducted in Kuki areas, security forces were fired upon while conducting operations at Leilon Vaiphei area in Kangpokpi district today.
The attack was carried out by Kuki militants when the security forces were conducting search and area domination operations in the area around Leilon Vaiphei and Konsakhul village.
The security operations began early in the morning.
Sources said the fire came from hilltops at Leilon Vaiphei.
Reinforcement was called in, and the security forces continued.
At around 8 am, security forces cordoned off a suspected area in Lailon Vaiphei's Khunou for a search operation.
Suspecting presence of over 30 Kuki militants hiding in the area, the security forces issued warning to them to lay down arms and surrender, sources said.
While there have been no reports of any militants being detained or arrested, sources said additional security forces have been rushed in the area.
Meanwhile, denouncing the security operations, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kuki civil body, has imposed a shutdown on National Highway-2 and National Highway-37.
