IMP/BPR, Jun 21 : Protests against the arrest of former Arambai Tenggol (AT) volunteers continued today, as several Meira Paibi groups questioned the role of security forces during the peak of the crisis that began on May 3, 2023 and the commitment given that no punitive action would be taken against those who surrender illegala arms.
Widespread protests were held across Bishnupur district, including Moirangkhunou, Khudekpi, Keinou, Oinam, and other areas, demanding the release of former AT members.
At most of the protest sites, the demonstrators stated that the crackdown on AT following their surrender of weapons, in response to an appeal by the Governor during the President’s Rule regime, is unacceptable.
Demanding the unconditional release of the arrested individuals, they asserted that action against AT would not help resolve the ongoing crisis.
The protesters contended the group's volunteers had only acted to protect people from armed aggression by a section of Kuki groups.
The Keikol Semgat Sagatpa Nupi Lup staged a sit-in protest at Keikol in Imphal East, demanding the unconditional release of the former AT members.
During the demonstration, the protesters questioned why the Chief Minister remained silent regarding the arrest of former AT members by the NIA.
They stated that the State Government had provided full security when alleged Kuki militants were recently brought to Imphal for medical treatment.
They asked whether the Government is working for the welfare of a single community.
A similar protest was also held at Heingang Ahallup Community Hall against the arrest of former Arambai Tenggol volunteers.
The demonstration was jointly organised by Heingang Ahallup Meira Paibi, Heingang Makha Leikai Meira Paibi, and Heingang Panthoibi Meira Paibi Lup.
During the protest, participants held placards reading, "We condemn the arrest of former AT members," "AT members are civilians," and "Release the arrested former AT members unconditionally," among others.
At a sit-in protest held at Thiyam Leishangkhong, participants carried placards accusing the Government of failing to honour its commitments.
The slogans used during the protest included  "People Need Trust, Trust Needs Honour," "How Can People Trust Future Appeals If Today’s Promises Are Ignored," "Honour Your Word," and "Is This How the Governor Will Act?".
The protesters cited the assurance given by the Governor in February last year that no punitive action would be taken against those who had looted or illegally possessed arms.
They contended that AT had surrendered the arms in their possession in response to the appeal.
The Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, Pallel (MPLAP) also demanded the unconditional release of the former AT members.
In a press note, the group questioned whether the Government has been able to resolve the crisis plaguing Manipur for over three years.
It also asked why the Governor has not fulfilled the assurances given last year.
