IMPHAL, Jun 23 : Considered a lifeline for the people of Ukhrul, the Ukhrul-Toloi-Tadubi Road (National Highway 102A) has remained cut off for the past five days following a landslide at Zhichurei in Senapati district on June 18.
Reports indicated that over 100 Ukhrul-bound loaded trucks are stranded at multiple points along the highway.
According to well-placed sources, the landslide, spanning nearly 400 metres, occurred at Zhichurei, located between Vaisiichu and Phaibung Khullen.
Agencies working under the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are currently engaged in clearing the debris using heavy machinery, and the process is expected to take another three to four days to complete, added the sources.
It is further reported that an excavator driver engaged in clearing the debris was injured after a falling stone from the hillside struck his head on June 19.
He is currently undergoing treatment in Guwahati.
The sources further stated that clearing the debris is taking longer than expected as mud and boulders continue to slide down from the nearby hill.
Moreover, vehicular movement along the highway remains unsafe due to ongoing construction work being carried out by NHIDCL as well as frequent landslides in the area, it said.
