Kakching, Jun 23: Aggrieved over the delay in payment of wages to job card holders under 10 Gram Panchayats of Langmeidong Community Development (CD) Block due to the absence of a Block Development Officer (BDO), job card holders staged a sit-in protest in front of the CD Block office on Tuesday.
Around 100 job card holders, including men and women from the affected Gram Panchayats, gathered at the office around 11 am and demanded immediate release of their pending wages. They said that despite completing the assigned works, their payments remained pending for nearly a month due to the non-availability of the BDO.
The protesters initially attempted to lock the CD Block office and urged the staff to come out. However, after some administrative committee chairpersons of the Gram Panchayats arrived and held discussions with them, the protesters decided to withdraw the office-locking attempt and continued with a sit-in protest.
A job card holder from Lamjao Gram Panchayat, Hijam Sumita, said that the BDO of Langmeidong CD Block was transferred on May 24, but no replacement has been posted till date. She stated that the absence of the officer has affected not only the timely disbursement of wages but also the issuance of important documents such as birth and death certificates required by the public.
She appealed to the authorities to appoint a new BDO by June 25 to ensure payment of pending wages and smooth functioning of essential services, failing which the people of the 10 Gram Panchayats would launch an intensified agitation.
Administrative Committee Chairperson of Chairel GP, Th Nando, said that due to the transfer and non-replacement of the BDO for over a month, job card holders of Nongmaikhong, Chairel, Hiyanglam, Langmeidong, Mayenglamjao, Pangantabi, Sekmaijin, Serou, Waikhong and Wangoo Gram Panchayats have been facing difficulties in receiving their wages.
He said that the administrative committee chairpersons assured the protesters that they would approach the authorities for early appointment of a BDO, release of pending wages and resumption of stalled works under the job card scheme.
Nando warned that if a BDO is not appointed within the deadline set by the job card holders, any further agitation launched by them would be difficult to contain.
