IMPHAL, Jun 24 : Sit-in protests were held today demanding the unconditional release of former Arambai Tenggol (AT) members arrested by the NIA.
The All Kiyamgei Nupi Chaokhat Thourang Lup (AKNCTL) and Peace and Integrity Committee Kiyamgei (PICK) jointly organised the protest at Kiyamgei Pal Ahalbi.
Participants held placards with slogans such as "We condemn the arrest of former AT members," "The Governor must keep his word," "Release the former AT members without any conditions," "AT members are not criminals," "Don’t arrest AT members," and "Update NRC" among others.
Speaking to the media, AKNCTL president Moirangthem Sobita stated that they would not remain silent if the former AT members are not released.
She further said that AT had surrendered the arms in its possession to the Government following an appeal by the Governor.
A similar protest was also held at Khurai Lamlong Keithel.
Apart from demanding the release of former AT members, the protesters also stated that no AT member should be arrested in the future.
They also accused the Government of being biased and of favouring the Kukis.
Last night, a torch rally was organised at Thoubal Awang Leikai, raising similar demands.
