RIMS performs Bentall procedure

IMPHAL, Jun 24: For the first time in the State, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal has successfully completed a Bentall procedure involving replacement of the aortic valve together with replacement of the aortic root and ascending aorta. 
The Bentall procedure, involving replacement of the aortic valve together with replacement of the aortic root and ascending aorta, is among the most complex and technically demanding open-heart surgeries performed worldwide.
The successful performance of the Bentall procedure at RIMS marks a major advancement in cardiac surgical care in Manipur, said a press release issued by the RIMS Media Cell.
The procedure was completed on June 18, 2026 and the patient, who was suffering from severe aortic valve regurgitation associated with dilatation of the aortic root and ascending aorta, has recovered well and is presently doing satisfactorily.
The surgery was successfully performed by a Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team led by Prof Thokchom Chito and the Cardiac Anaesthesia team led by Prof L Pradipkumar under the overall guidance and supervision of Prof Shyamkumar Thingnam, former Head of the Department of CTVS, PGI Chandigarh, it said.
In another milestone, the CTVS team also successfully performed Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) for the first time at RIMS during the same week.
The department has additionally been carrying out heart valve replacement surgeries and several congenital cardiac procedures, steadily expanding advanced cardiac care services in the State, it said.
The Director, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences lauded the team of Surgeons, Anaesthetists, perfusionist, Nurses and support staff for the achievements.
