Assault alleged

IMPHAL, Jun 24: Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCM) president Anand Wahengbam was allegedly assaulted by the party's general secretary Ningthoujam Popilal, at the MPCC office at Imphal today.
The alleged physical assault occurred amid a heated argument at the party's office in the evening. Anand Wahengbam was taken to Raj Medicity for medical treatment.
The argument which led to the alleged assault broke out when party members were discussing an internal issue, said sources.
Speaking to reporters, Anand Wahengbam said the alleged assault on him was a first in the party where a youth Congress was "assaulted" at the party office.
Anand said the alleged assault was "cowardly" of Popilal, and an act unbecoming of a Congress party member.
Leaderships of the Indian Youth Congress have been informed about the incident, he said.
There may be disagreement among the members, but he should not have resorted to violence, Anand said.
Accusing Popilal of slapping him, Anand said it was not only an assault on him but on all the leaders of the party.
Anand said the party leaders should intervene and act against those trying to break the party.
Anand said he expects the party leaders to take action against Popilal.
