IMPHAL, Jun 25 : In a significant step that could benefit the media fraternity, Karkinos Manipur Hospital is launching an initiative aimed at providing special discounted treatment facilities for media professionals and their families.
This was decided when a delegation of senior journalists and representatives of the Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) and the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) visited Karkinos Manipur Hospital, located within the JNIMS campus, Porompat, Imphal yesterday.
The media delegation included Dr RK Nimai, advisor, AMWJU; Khogendra Khomdram, president, EGM; Yumnam Rupachandra, secretary, EGM; and Asem Bhakta Singh, president, AMWJU among other senior Editors of several daily newspapers.
During the visit, Karkinos Manipur Hospital  expressed its desire to extend special discounted treatment facilities to members of the media fraternity and their families. The media delegation and the hospital agreed to work out the modalities and operational framework for the initiative in the coming weeks.
In addition, the hospital and the media delegation jointly decided to organise a free cancer screening programme for members of the media fraternity and their family members during the first week of July 2026.
The screening programme will focus on the early detection of breast, oral and cervical cancers, which are among the most common cancers affecting the population.
The screening initiative will be carried out by Karkinos's dedicated Early Cancer Detection Team, which regularly conducts awareness and screening activities across Manipur.
During the visit, the media delegation interacted with the hospital's medical experts and management team and gained first-hand knowledge of the available cancer care services.
The initiative was aimed at strengthening understanding between the healthcare and media communities while promoting greater awareness about cancer care and early detection among the public.
Medical Superintendent Dr Sapam Opendro highlighted the vision behind the establishment of Karkinos Manipur Hospital and its commitment to making quality cancer care accessible and affordable for the people of Manipur and the North East.
He informed the visiting media team that the hospital today offers comprehensive cancer care services under a single roof, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the State for specialised treatment.
Dr Opendro explained that the hospital provides a wide range of services including Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, advanced diagnostics, OPD and IPD services, day-care chemotherapy, pain and palliative care, second opinion services and multidisciplinary tumour board consultations.
The hospital also offers advanced diagnostic support such as biopsy procedures, histopathology, imaging integration, molecular profiling and genomic testing to help doctors plan personalised treatment for patients.
Early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve treatment outcomes and reduce the burden of cancer, he said.
Dr Opendro further stated that Karkinos follows a patient-centric model of care where diagnosis, treatment planning, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy coordination, supportive care and follow-up services are integrated within one system.
The hospital is supported by a team of experienced specialists across various disciplines, enabling patients to receive coordinated and timely treatment closer to their homes.
The media delegation expressed appreciation for the efforts of Karkinos in establishing a modern and comprehensive cancer care facility in Manipur. They acknowledged that creating and sustaining advanced healthcare infrastructure in the region  involves significant challenges and appreciated the commitment shown by the organisation in bringing quality cancer treatment closer to the people.
Karkinos Mumbai Head Office’s National Marketing and Policy Head, M Biswanath Sinha appreciated the delegation, EGM and AMWJU for the visit.
He reaffirmed Karkinos Manipur Hospital's commitment to work closely with the media, civil society organisations and the wider community to promote cancer awareness, encourage early detection and improve access to quality cancer care across Manipur.
