Youth arrested with Ganja given interim bail

IMPHAL, Jun 25: The Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West today granted interim bail to a youth who was arrested along with 420 grams of Ganja from Imphal International Airport yesterday.
Harish Maibam (23) was detained by CISF personnel yesterday morning after detecting the 420 grams of Ganja in his luggage during checking. He was later handed over to the Singjamei police station.
Harish Maibam hails from Singjamei Kshetri Leikai Mongkhang Lambi.
He was produced before the Court of the CJM today with a prayer for remanding him to 5-day police custody.
In the Court, the defence counsel submitted that the quantity of the Ganja seized was small and it was for the accused's personal use.
Stating there the accused has no criminal antecedents, the counsel also submitted seized Ganja is not locally made but a manufactured product found in the international market.
During the hearing, the accused also admitted to using Ganja daily, indicating abuse and addiction.
Hearing the submissions, the Court of the CJM observed that there exists the probability that the accused was in possession of the Ganja for his own usage, and that the offence itself is bailable.
The Court then granted the accused interim bail on furnishing a bail bond and one surety of Rs 50,000 each till June 29.
The Court further directed the accused to attend the Singjamei police station everyday at 10.30 am from June 26 to 28, and present himself to the Investigating Officer for interrogation/examination.
It also directed the accused to appear before the Special Judge NDPS Imphal on June 29 and cooperate with the investigation.
The Court also stated that the Investigating Officer may seek for further remand or any other prayers including cancellation of interim bail based on the development of the investigation before the Special Judge, NDPS, Imphal on June 29.
