IMPHAL, Jun 25: Well known social activist and founder-director of the North East India Women Initiative for Peace, Binalakshmi Nepram has called on "mothers" to unite and continue to be the bridge for peaceful coexistence between communities.
The mothers of Manipur have always been the force that binds the communities together. They must continue to do so in the future, Binalakshmi said at the "Manipur Mother's Peace Congregation" held at Hotel Imphal today.
The congregation was jointly organised by the Mothers of Manipur, Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network and North East India Women Initiative for Peace.
Speaking to the gathering, Binalakshmi expressed concern that the image and integrity of the mothers of Manipur have been hurt and maligned by narratives that are false and concocted.
The mothers of Manipur have always been fierce and their courage is well known by the world. But, unfortunately many narratives were spun and propagated by vested interest groups during the current conflict to discredit them, Binalakshmi said.
She added the congregation today is held to understand the role women can play in the Manipur conflict to foster peace, and to show their resilience before the world.
Most conflicts around the world, about 80 percent, are happening in places where indigenous people reside. The Manipur conflict is no different. Part of it may have been driven by the greed for critical resources Manipur possesses, Binalakshmi said.
While women must unite and work towards bringing reconciliation and fostering peace, their resilience, courage and sacrifices they have made for Manipur's integrity must be made known to all, she said.
The true image of the women of Manipur, one that is free from false narratives, will be shown in a congregation scheduled to be held in Delhi on July 18, she said.
Representatives of several civil bodies, All Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Supi Samaj, Chingtam Apunba Lup, Imagi Meira, All Tribal Women Organisation, All Manipur Positive Women Network, Yelhoumee Phurup, academicians, leaders of different communities including Khoibu and Tangkhul, and many resource persons attended the congregation.
