IMPHAL, Jun 25 : The High Court of Manipur has reserved its judgment on an election petition filed by veteran politician Okram Joy, challenging the election of Karam Shyam from the Langthabal Assembly Constituency in the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election.
The matter was heard by the Chief Justice.
During the final hearing, counsels appearing for both sides concluded their oral submissions and also submitted written synopses of arguments as directed by the Court.
The election petition raised questions relating to the validity of the returned candidate’s nomination, with allegations concerning suppression of material information on immovable properties and incorrect disclosure of educational qualifications in the statutory affidavit filed along with the nomination papers.
The petitioner contended that such alleged non-disclosures and misrepresentations materially affected the electoral process and rendered the acceptance of the nomination invalid under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
After completion of arguments and filing of written submissions by both sides, the Chief Justice concluded the hearing and reserved orders.
The matter now awaits final judgment.
