IMPHAL, Jun 27: The Forum for Protection of Heritage for 23 Unsung Heroes (Andaman Chapter) 1891 has urged the State Government to declare November 23 as "Exile Day" and declare it a holiday honouring the 23 Manipuri freedom fighters who were exiled to the Andaman in 1891.
While declaring the day as a State holiday, the story/history of the day must also be included in school syllabus, said the forum's president, Chongtham Tomba at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
While the place where the 23 freedom fighters were sent has been renamed as Mount Manipur in their honour, it wouldn't do justice if their history is not included in the school textbooks for future generations to learn, Tomba said.
Notably, a memorial in honour of the 23 freedom fighters has been installed at Mount Manipur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Earlier known as Mount Harriet, the National Park was renamed Mount Manipur in 2021.
After the British won the Anglo-Manipur war in 1891, several freedom fighters including Pukhrambam Kajao, Niranjan Subedar, Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General and Chirai Thangal were hanged.
And, 23 other freedom fighters, including Maharaja Kulachandra Singh were forced into exile in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The 23 freedom fighters include Maharaja Kulachandra, Angousana Singh (Senapati), Lokendra Birjit Singh (Wangkheirakpa), Maisnam Samu Singh, Chongtham Nilamani Singh, Major Chingtha Miya, Heikrujam Chaobaton Singh, Mangsatabam Tonjao Singh, Ingudam Khana Singh, Chingsubam Ningthouba Singh, Phanjoubam Thouba Singh, Ashangbam Phurahongba, Nongthombam Trilok Singh, Sagolsem Dhan Singh, Yengkhom Abungjao, Khomdram Guna, Usham Arun Singh, Hidam Chaoba Singh, Mayengbam Dhojo, Nepram Noni, Laishram Khamba, Goukami (Naga) and Gouho (Naga).
