KANGPOKPI, Jun 28
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Centre and the State Govt demanding immediate restoration of unres- tricted movement along National and Inter-State High- ways passing through Kangpokpi district.
Prolonged blockade has severely affected road transportation, causing immense hardship to all communities, particularly residents of Kangpokpi district, said CoTU.
Alleging that the Government has failed to uphold law and order and guarantee the free movement of citizens, CoTU said unrestricted transport and public access to the National and Inter-State Highways must be restored within 48 hours.
Failure to open the highway would compel the Kuki-Zo community to undertake appropriate democratic measures to safeguard its rights, interests and security, CoTU cautioned the Centre and the State.
The decision to issue the 48-hour ultimatum was taken during a joint deliberation attended by members of all Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Kangpokpi district at CoTU's administrative office on Saturday.
Issuing the 48-hour ultimatum, which begins effective from midnight of June 27, CoTU said the Governments have failed to ensure uninterrupted movement of essential commodities, medicines, commercial goods and civilians for more than a month due to blockade imposed by Naga groups.
CoTU said the prolonged disruption has severely affected road transportation—the lifeline of the people and backbone of economic activities—causing immense hardship to all communities, particularly residents of Kangpokpi district.
Despite repeated appeals and the passage of considerable time, the Governments have failed to restore normalcy and ensure unobstructed movement along the public highways, the organisation alleged.
The Government of Manipur, in coordination with the Centre and the security agencies concerned, must immediately dismantle all unauthorised checkpoints and gates established along National and Inter-State Highways and restore unrestricted public access within 48 hours, CoTU said.
If the demands remain unaddressed, CoTU said the Kuki-Zo community may be compelled to initiate "appropriate and pre-emptive democratic measures" to protect the interests, rights and security of the general public.
Any untoward incident arising from the authorities' continuous failure to resolve the issue would rest entirely with the Government of Manipur and the authorities concerned, CoTU said.
