UKHRUL, Jun 28: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has strongly condemned the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) describing the six Naga hostages who were recovered dead recently as "Kacha Nagas".
The use of the extremely repulsive and impudent term is defamatory and provocative. The Kuki-Zo Council must tender an official public apology to the Nagas of Manipur, without any condition and delay, said the Working Committee of the TNL in a statement.
The six Liangmai Nagas were among 18 civilians detained and later held hostage by locals of Leilon Vaiphei and armed Kuki militants on May 13. While other hostages were released days later, the dismembered bodies of the six, all men, were recovered on June 10.
On June 25, Kuki-Zo Council had held a press conference, wherein its chairman Henlienthang Thanglet admitted to Kuki-Zo killing the six Naga men. The KZC leader had called the six "Kacha Nagas" and stated that the killing was driven by "emotion".
The Working Committee of the TNL said the manner in which the Kuki-Zo Council admitted and issued an "immature" apology over the heinous killing of the six innocent Liangmai Naga civilians is "utterly unqualified and unacceptable."
The usage of the words "Kacha Naga" by the KZC chairman Henlienthang Thanglet is defamatory and provocative, therefore, the council must tender an official public apology to the Nagas of Manipur, without any condition and delay, it said.
The functionaries of the Kuki-Zo Council must also be arrested and put on trial in connection with the case, said the Working Committee TNL.
Further, the existence of the Kuki-Zo Council as an organisation is recognised by the Government of Manipur as per an official notification issued on December 18, 2024. The Government must therefore disband the so-called KZC with immediate effect, it added.
To ensure that the rule of law is honoured and protected in the State of Manipur, the perpetrators of the heinous crime must be booked, arrested and tried in the Court of law and awarded a befitting punishment, it said.
Also, the Suspension of Operation (SoO) must be abrogated immediately, and the cadres of the KNF-P involved in the abduction and killing of innocent Naga civilians must be arrested, asserted the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long. The Federation of Haomee too condemned the use of the "derogatory term" and said the Government and its law enforcement agencies must arrest the KZC leaders in connection with the case. It also asserted that the KZC leader's statements were highly provocative and repulsive.
