IMPHAL, Jun 3 : Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) Vice Chancellor Prof W Chandbabu today said the university’s research infrastructure is at “zero level” and urged the Government to provide adequate funds and special initiatives to strengthen it.
He was speaking as chief guest at the 5th Departmental Talk Series organised by DMU’s Physics Department at Room No 73, DM College of Science, on the recently discovered ‘Loktak Protocluster’.
Prof Chandbabu lauded the talk for introducing students to the discovery made by Dr Ronaldo Laishram, postdoctoral researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.
Stressing the need to increase the number of researchers, he said Manipur must motivate budding scholars.
“Without research, we cannot become an economic superpower or strengthen defence”, he said, adding that regular interaction between researchers and students is vital.
He called for policy programmes to build a research ecosystem, collaborations with leading institutes, and frequent student exchange programmes.
“Infrastructure may be lacking, but we cannot be discouraged. The fund position is weak. Government must give special attention, and teachers must also work hard”, he added.
Astrophysicist Dr Ronaldo Laishram was the resource person. Prof M Shomananda, Head of Physics Department, chaired the session. School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Dean Prof L Nandababu, Registrar Dr RK Joteen, and DM College of Science Principal Prof Ksh Birbal attended as special guests.
