Imphal, Jun 29 : The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Imphal West remanded a 23-year-old man from Assam to judicial custody till July 13, today in connection with a case involving alleged blackmail and criminal intimidation of a woman.
The accused, identified as Roshan Singha (23), son of Bishwo Kumar Singha of Malugram Village, Cachar district, Assam, was arrested by a team of the Cyber Crime Police Station, Manipur, from the gate of Imphal Airport at around 5.45 pm on June 20.
He was produced before the Court by the investigating team along with a prayer seeking judicial custody remand to facilitate a smooth investigation into the case.
What the Prosecution says
The victim stated that she became acquainted with the accused in September 2018 through one of her friends.
At that time, the accused allegedly introduced himself as a resident of Kumbi Bazar Awang Leikai, Manipur, while claiming to be staying in Jalandhar.
The victim was then working as a nurse at a private hospital in Kolkata.
The victim stated that they regularly chatted and developed a close relationship.
In 2020, she returned home during the Covid pandemic and later moved to Bengaluru, where she resumed her nursing profession in 2023.
Throughout this period, she remained in contact with the accused.
The victim claimed that the accused sought financial assistance on several occasions, claiming that his father had suffered a stroke and later that his father had passed away, leaving behind substantial hospital bills.
Believing his claims, the victim transferred money for the alleged medical expenses.
The accused also allegedly assured the victim that he intended to marry her and said he would send his parents to discuss their marriage.
He reportedly asked her to meet him in Guwahati in 2024.
Acting on his assurances, the victim resigned from her job in Bengaluru with the intention of marrying him and travelled to Guwahati.
The accused received her at Guwahati Airport, and the two stayed for two days at a hotel in Paltan Bazar before travelling to Imphal.
After returning to Imphal, the victim went to her home while the accused allegedly returned to his residence.
They continued to communicate regularly.
The accused later claimed he was returning to Jalandhar but allegedly continued to ask for money repeatedly, citing medical treatment expenses for his mother and sister.
The victim transferred additional amounts through online transactions.
According to the prosecution, in February last year the accused allegedly sent a video clip to the victim through WhatsApp and threatened to circulate it among her family members.
The video was recorded during their stay at the hotel in  Guwahati.
Despite the victim's repeated requests to delete the video, the accused allegedly refused.
Fearing the video would be circulated, the victim allegedly transferred more money to his account.
The prosecution further stated that the victim later discovered that the accused's real identity was Roshan Singha of Malugram Village, Cachar, Assam.
She alleged that he had been blackmailing and threatening her for a prolonged period.
Unable to bear the harassment any longer, she recently narrated the entire incident to her aunt.
According to the prosecution, the total amount allegedly transferred or borrowed by the accused from the victim is around Rs 19 lakh.
During the investigation, police analysis indicated that the accused had been staying in and around Guwahati.
However, his exact location could not be confirmed, and investigators feared that issuing prior notice could enable him to abscond and evade arrest.
Acting on source inputs and technical analysis, the Cyber Crime Police traced and arrested the accused from the gate of Imphal Airport on June 20.
One mobile phone was seized from his possession.
The APP submitted that, considering the facts and circumstances of the case, judicial custody was necessary for a fair and effective investigation.
After hearing the submissions of the prosecution and perusing the case records, the Court remanded the accused to judicial custody till July 13 for further investigation.
