Many in race for State BJP chief’s post

IMPHAL, Jun 29: With BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda expected to quit her post soon as she was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha Member today, the race for the next State BJP chief is getting heated up and many are in the race.
The contenders for the post of BJP Manipur Pradesh president include many sitting MLAs as well as old-time office bearers of the party.
They have already started lobbying for the post at the highest level, sources further said.
The contenders have started lobbying with BJP Central leaders close to them.
Manipur is still on the boil as the Kuki-Meitei conflict which erupted on May 3, 2023 remains unresolved. The situation has only worsened with Kukis and Nagas caught in a violent conflict.
Amid this unrest, the 13th Manipur Legislative election is due in early 2027 and the party president is expected to play a key role in the election.
However, as of now, it could not be ascertained who would be favoured by BJP Central leadership for the post of BJP State unit president.
At the same time, there are speculations that an MLA or an individual with RSS background chosen by RSS may be selected for the post of BJP Manipur Pradesh president.
Sources said that an MLA from Imphal East who was a Minister in the N Biren Government is among the contenders.
A sitting MLA from Thoubal district who served as a Minister earlier is also in the race.
Another sitting MLA from Imphal West who too served as a Minister earlier is also eyeing the post of BJP Manipur Pradesh president.
In addition to the sitting MLAs, some former and incumbent office bearers of the party are also in the race.
Some of the contenders are already camping at Delhi lobbying with Central leaders for the post, said the sources.
Some others are lobbying with BJP North East-in-charge Sambit Patra and BJP Manipur in-charge Dr Ajeet Gopchade, according to the sources.
