CHANDEL, Jun 29: As part of the ongoing Khet Bachao Abhiyan, a three-day capacity building programme on “Soil Fertility Enhancement through Simple Measures” was inaugurated today under the NICRA Project at the Community Hall of Lambung village, Chandel.
The programme was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chandel, and coordinated by Dr Kangjam Sonamani Singh, Nodal Officer of the NICRA Project, Chandel.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Sonamani stressed the importance of resource conservation and sustainable management of fertile soil. He highlighted that practices like mono-cropping and keeping fields idle after the paddy season often contribute to soil erosion. He emphasised that crop rotation helps maintain rooted systems in the fields, which keeps the soil intact and prevents erosion. He also encouraged hill farmers to adopt organic manure and vermicomposting methods, stating that sincere efforts towards improving soil fertility would enhance production, productivity and quality of agricultural yields.
Dr Lovejoy Anal, District Agriculture Officer (DAO), Chandel, urged farmers to use chemical fertilisers only as a last resort and encouraged greater use of organic manure in agricultural fields.
Dr Chanu Langlentombi, Scientist (Agroforestry), ICAR Manipur Centre, called for reducing shifting cultivation practices and minimising deforestation to protect natural resources.
Dr Khumlo Levish, SMS (Agronomy), explained the benefits of Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), vermicomposting, kitchen waste management and crop residue recycling in promoting organic farming in the district. She stressed the importance of climate-smart farming practices in the present scenario.
Dr A Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Chandel, urged farmers to remain updated with modern agricultural practices and cautioned against excessive and unnecessary use of fertilisers.
The programme was attended by Lavid Anal, SMS (Horticulture), Kamei Super, Programme Assistant (Farm), and Hb Lugni, Senior Research Fellow.
During the programme, improved varieties of paddy seeds, carrot, beetroot, coriander, French bean and other summer vegetable seeds were distributed to farmers.
