In a major anti-drug operation, a special team of the Saitual District Executive Force (DEF) seized 587 grams of heroin valued at approximately Rs 1.17 crore and arrested a woman suspected of trafficking the contraband.
According to police, the seizure was made during a random vehicle checking operation conducted by the Saitual DEF Special Team at Keifang on June 1.
A black Bolero Neo bearing registration number MN01AX0569, which was travelling from Churachandpur in Manipur towards Aizawl, was intercepted at around 3 am.
During the inspection, one of the passengers, identified as Nengshi Haokip (51), daughter of Jangsem Haokip and a resident of Salbung in Manipur's Churachandpur district, came under suspicion.
Following procedures laid down under Section 50 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, she was searched in the presence of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) after obtaining her consent.
A female police Constable conducted the search, during which authorities recovered 50 soap cases containing heroin concealed inside her clothing. The police subsequently searched her belongings and seized the narcotic substance weighing 587 grams.
Officials estimated the value of the seized heroin at around Rs 1,17,40,000 in the illicit market. A Vivo mobile  phone believed to be linked to the case was also confiscated.
Police have registered a case at Saitual Police Station and initiated further investigation to ascertain the source and intended destination of the contraband, as well as possible links to interstate drug trafficking networks.
The seizure highlights the continued efforts of Mizoram Police to curb the movement of narcotics through the state, which remains a key transit route for drug trafficking in the North East. The NE Post
