IMPHAL, Jun 4 : To lay groundwork for a regional political platform called the Manipur People’s Movement (MPM), a public convention will be held on June 14.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, MPM convenor Oinam Premdas Khuman said that the motto of MPM is ‘Manipur first’.
He said that the political journey of Manipur after 1949 is characterised by unrest, lack of communal harmony and myriad issues.
The Government of India does not and never tries to understand the sentiment of Manipuri people. All along, the people of Manipur have been suffering a step-motherly treatment at the hands of New Delhi, Premdas said.
He said that it’s high time for the youth of the State to launch a strong political movement in order to bring peace and development in the State.
He said that no National political party has ever bothered to address the grievances and aspirations of the youth of Manipur.
Premdas said that the MPM was formed with youths and intellectuals working on different platforms came together after acknowledging the pressing need for a strong political movement in Manipur.
Nobody will be able to say for sure how long Manipur will survive if the youths fail to take a collective political decision and act accordingly, he asserted.
He then invited youths to take part in the convention scheduled for June 14 in order to launch a political platform based on regionalism.
MPM advisor Khaidem Mani said that a new regional political platform will come into being from June 14.
It is heartening to note that a large number of youth have shown a determination to change the present political system marked by step-motherly treatment (by Government of India), prolonged unrest and authoritarian rule, he said.
Khaidem Mani said that a large number of people between 19 and 55 including Professors, research scholars and intellectuals have been working together to launch a strong political movement.
Efforts are also on to bring together all the existing regional political platforms, he said.
Giving a concrete shape to the idea of Manipur, and protecting the integrity of Manipur and the sanctity of its territory are some of the objectives of the Manipur People’s Movement, Khaidem Mani added.
