'Drug trafficker' stabs cop to death

IMPHAL, Jun 4: In a brazen act of challenging law enforcement agencies, a suspected drug trafficker stabbed a security personnel to death during an anti-drug drive at Thoubal Moijing Meena Bazaar Thongkhong last night.
A team of Thoubal commandos, acting on specific information regarding illicit drug trafficking, detained two drug peddlers identified as Md Naobi alias Mahil (25) s/o Md Tamijur Rahaman of Moijing Leingoijin and Salman Khan (30) s/o Allauddin of Moijing Mai-bam Leikai last night, sources said.
As the commando team frisked and searched the detainees, Md Naobi alias Mahil stabbed Havildar Khoirom Suresh with a knife inflicting fatal injuries before the two detainees fled from the spot, taking advantage of the darkness, said the sources.
Soon after, injured Khoirom Suresh (39) s/o (L) Ibopishak of Yairipok Laimanai was rushed to Thoubal district hospital for treatment but the doctor declared the police personnel dead.
It is said that Khoirom Suresh is a Havildar of 4th IRB, presently attached to Thoubal Commando.
After an inquest was conducted by a team of Forensic Science experts, the dead body was deposited at JNIMS morgue late last night.
The dead body of Suresh was handed over to family members after a post mortem was conducted today in the presence of a Duty Magistrate with full video coverage.
On the other hand, following intensive search operations, main accused Md Naobi alias Mahil was arrested today by Thoubal District Police.
He is likely to be produced before a Duty Magistrate late this evening.
Meanwhile, the United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur has expressed deep shock and strongest condemnation over the killing of Havildar Khoirom Suresh in a knife attack during the anti-drug operation at Thoubal Moijing on June 3, 2026.
Saying that this barbaric act was a direct attack on the rule of law, the UMPC asserted that such violent acts against law enforcement personnel cannot and must not be tolerated in a civilized society.
The UMPC has also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues of Havildar Khoirom Suresh.
It further urged the Government and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation, identify all individuals involved in the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.
