IMPHAL, Jun 5: Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West remanded a 30-year-old man accused of physically assaulting his own wife in public to police custody till June 8.
The man, identified as Md Islamuddin, allegedly assaulted his own wife at Thangal Bazar yesterday morning.
Md Islamuddin hails from Yairipok Kekru Makha. He was produced before the CJM Imphal West by City police today with a prayer for taking him to police custody for a period of 4 days.
A complaint lodged with the police said the victim woman worked as a domestic helper at a house at Thangal Bazar.
Yesterday, while she was standing near the iron gate of the residence where she works, the husband suddenly came from behind, allegedly grabbed her neck and forcefully hit her head against the iron gate. Due to the assault, she sustained injuries on her head and other parts of her body. The accused was then detained by people nearby, and the woman was rushed to RIMS hospital for medical treatment.
The two are not legally divorced, but they have been living separately for the past two and half years, said the prosecutor in the Court of the CJM Imphal West.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused husband has admitted to have committed the offences which have been brought against him, said the prosecutor.
The accused has also admitted to assaulting his wife multiple times in the past, and she has multiple injury marks on her body, added the prosecutor.
The prosecutor further argued that the accused slamming the victim's head into the iron gate was an attempted murder, and sought police custody remand of the accused for further investigation.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the prosecutor and on perusal of the case record, sent the accused to police custody for 4 days till June 8.
