IMPHAL, Jun 5: The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and the United Committee Manipur (UCM) are jointly observing the 25th Great June Uprising Unity Day on June 18.
Speaking to reporters at AMUCO's office at Kwakeithel today, YK Dhiren, the Observation Committee's chairman and UCM's president, said The Great June Uprising Unity Day is observed every year on June 18 to remember the massive public uprising of 2001 against Government of India's policies that threatened Manipur's boundary and integrity.
The day also honours the 18 souls who were martyred on June 18, 2001, Dhiren said.
AMUCO and UCM are making necessary preparations including formation of sub-committees to observe the day in a grand manner, Dhiren added.
Appealing to the public to take part in the commemoration, Dhiren said it is hoped that the observance will help bring about greater unity among the people and a firm resolution to protect and safeguard Manipur's integrity.
The Observation Committee's vice-chairman and AMUCO president Sanjoy Sorokhaibam commented on the current crises, and said the Government of India must cease using SoO Kuki militants as proxies.
He accused the Government of India of implementing divisive policies, and called on the people to unite and face the threats facing the State collectively.
The many crises including frequent blockades and counter-blockades in Manipur are glaring examples of Government of India's failure, he added.
