IMPHAL, Jun 5: The two alleged smugglers who were arrested with 4 kilograms of brown sugar at the Imphal International Airport yesterday have been sent to police custody for a period of 11 days till June 15.
The two alleged drug smugglers, Syed Sabir Ali (26) and Khutheibam Sabir Ahmed, both of Kiyamgei Oinam Loukon were produced before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West today.
Sending the two to police custody, the Court directed the police to produce them before the Special Court ND&PS on June 15.
The two were trying to board an Indigo flight to Kolkata when they were arrested by the airport police and CISF personnel yesterday.
The airport security detained Syed Sabir Ali first on suspicion and it led to the identification and detention of Khutheibam Sabir Ahmed.
In the Court of the CJM Imphal West, the prosecutor submitted that Syed Sabir Ali was subjected to random checking at around 11 am yesterday.
During the random physical checking using an X-Ray machine, Syed told security personnel he was travelling to Kolkata. And, on questioning, he further revealed that one of the luggage bags was his and the other belonged to another passenger, who had already entered the security hold area.
The CISF and airport police then located and intercepted Khutheibam Sabir Ahmed.
On checking their belongings, the security personnel found the two luggage bags containing one package of brown sugar weighing 2 kilograms each.
The two persons and the seized items were then handed over to the Singjamei police.
During preliminarily interrogation, the two accused have admitted to have committed the charges levelled against them, said the prosecutor.
The investigation is in the initial and crucial stage. Preliminary interrogation of the accused persons has revealed involvement of other unknown associates and a larger organised network engaged in trafficking of narcotic drugs. Further investigation is needed to establish involvement of other players such as suppliers, financiers, receivers and conspirators operating both within and outside the State, said the prosecutor, asking the Court of the CJM to send the two to police custody for further interrogation.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the prosecutor and on perusal of the case record, remanded the accused persons to 11 days police custody.
The Court also directed the Investigating Officer to produce the two before the Special Court ND&PS after the completion of police custody period on June 15.
