IMPHAL, Jun 6 : The Opposition Congress party has decided not to field its candidate for election to the State’s lone Rajya Sabha seat.
With Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Okram Ibobi in the chair, Congress MLAs and MPCC office bearers held a meeting at the Congress Bhavan, BT Road here at around 3 pm today.
The meeting decided not to put up any Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 18.
The Congress party has only five MLAs in the 60-Member Manipur Legis- lative Assembly, and as such it does not have the required strength to field a candidate for the election to the State’s lone Rajya Sabha seat.
If the Congress party must field a candidate, at least six MLAs should act as the candidate’s proposers.
After the expiry of the sitting MLAs of Tadubi AC and Thanlon AC, there are 58 MLAs at present.
The party-wide distribution of MLAs is; BJP-36, NPP-6, NPF-5, Congress-5, KPA-2, JD(U)-1 and Independent-2.
Notably, BJP has already nominated its State unit president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi as its candidate  for the Rajya Sabha election.
As the Congress party has decided not to field any candidate for the Rajya Sabha election, A Sharda is set to secure the Rajya Sa-bha seat unopposed and she would be the second Rajya Sabha Member elec- ted unopposed from Manipur.
Earlier, Congress candidate late Abdul Salam was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in 2014 when Okram Ibobi was the Chief Minister.
