BISHNUPUR, Jun 8: Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS) and District Hospital Management Committee member Moirangthem Bilkee has appealed to all concerned not to politicise healthcare institutions, stating that hospitals are meant to save lives and should remain above political considerations.
Bilkee made the remarks during a press conference organised by the District Hospital Management Committee at Bishnupur District Hospital on Monday.
Addressing the media, she said that Bishnupur District Hospital caters not only to the residents of Bishnupur district but also to people from neighbouring districts such as Churachandpur, Noney, Senapati and Kakching who come to avail medical treatment and healthcare services.
She noted that the hospital, which currently has a capacity of 50 beds, has received approval for upgradation into a 200-bedded hospital to meet the growing healthcare demands of the region. According to Bilkee, the proposed expansion is the result of sustained and collective efforts by several stakeholders, including Bishnupur MLA and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, former Deputy Commissioner L Bikram, current Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam, former and present Sub-Divisional Officers, health officials and members of the District Hospital Management Committee.
She said the committee had been consistently pursuing the matter with the concerned authorities and working towards fulfilling the necessary criteria required for the upgradation of the hospital. As part of the initiative, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam visited the hospital on May 2 and inspected the proposed site for the expansion project.
Bilkee also referred to a recent social media post made by a retired IAS officer, who reportedly claimed that the proposal for upgrading the hospital was taken up following a written representation submitted by him to the Governor of Manipur.
Expressing disappointment over the claim, Bilkee said the statement overlooked the contributions of numerous individuals and institutions who had worked tirelessly over the years to improve the hospital's infrastructure and services.
She maintained that the Hospital Management Committee, since taking charge three years ago, has made considerable efforts to address various shortcomings and strengthen the functioning of the hospital.
She further stated that the process of upgrading a district hospital to a 200-bedded facility involves fulfilling multiple criteria, which had been achieved through coordinated efforts involving the committee, elected representatives, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Medical Superintendent (MS) and other concerned authorities. Describing the social media remarks as unfortunate, Bilkee urged individuals not to bring narrow political interests into matters related to public healthcare. "We welcome any individual or organisation that genuinely contributes towards the development and betterment of the hospital, but healthcare institutions should not be turned into platforms for political claims and counterclaims,” she said. The press conference was attended by members of the District Hospital Management Committee and stakeholders.
