THOUBAL, Jun 8: Demanding the authorities concerned to revoke Vishal Mega Mart's shop license, Thoubal Keithel women vendors have announced a total shutdown in the whole of Thoubal district from midnight today.
The shutdown will last until Vishal Mega Mart's shop license is revoked. All schools, colleges and markets in Thoubal district will remain shut. Only water supply, electricity and emergency services will be exempted from the purview of the shutdown, said women vendors.
Thoubal Keithel women vendors and shopkeepers have been agitating against Vishal Mega Mart opening shop at Thoubal since May 30.
Earlier, protesters had said that the Thoubal Keithel would remain shut until Vishal Mega Mart shifts its location or its shop license is revoked.
Today, women vendors and shopkeepers shut one side of the Asian Highway-1, and held a sit-in protest demonstration.
The women vendors asserted that the opening of the Vishal Mega Mart in Thoubal proper could kill local businesses.
While a meeting was scheduled today between the women vendors and MAHUD's Principal Secretary at Thoubal DC office, it was called off at the last minute informing that the Principal Secretary has taken a 2-day leave, said a woman protester.
By cancelling the meeting, the authorities concerned have "deliberately ignored us". "Therefore, we have decided to impose a total shutdown in the whole of the district until the Vishal Mega mart's license is revoked," said the woman.
The women vendors appealed to civil society organisations to support their demand, and cooperate in enforcing the shutdown.
