IMPHAL, Jul 1 : The Naga People’s Front (NPF), Manipur Unit has dared the Congress party to justify the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement and prove that signing the particular agreement was politically correct.
Speaking to media persons at Thangmeiband Tarung office today, NPF Manipur Unit president Awangbow Newmai asked the Congress party to justify why its Government set up so many designated camps of SoO militants even though these militants belong to communities with the least number of population.
After killing innocent people, Kuki terrorists have been hiding in SoO designated camps.
People know that the attacks at Leilon Vaiphei, Sanakeithel, TM Kasom and Imphal-Ukhrul road were carried out by militants who came out from SoO designated camps, Awangbow said.
When the army carried out operations to nab the murderers of the six people abducted from Leilon Vaiphei, the militants involved in the barbaric murder ran into a SoO designated camp. As a result, the perpetrators of the heinous crime could not be apprehended till date, he said.
These SoO camps have turned out to be safe havens for criminals. If the Congress party has any objection to the people’s demand for removal of these camps, it must justify its position, he said.
Pointing out that there are records of killing 1600 people by security forces in counter insurgency operations in the valley, Awangbow Newmai asked if the Congress Government carried out any such operation against Kuki militants and how many Kuki militants were eliminated.
The NPF Manipur unit president demanded the Congress party to justify its claim that the SoO agreement was signed in public interest.
It was during the Congress party’s rule in the State that around 1000 people were killed in Naga- Kuki clash, around 700 people in Kuki-Paite clash and around 400 people in Meitei-Pangal clash, totalling to around 2100 people.
The number of casualties reported so far during the ongoing crisis, though quite unfortunate and unwanted, is much lower than the casualties suffered under the Congress Government, he said.
He also reiterated that the new districts were created by the Congress Government not for administrative convenience but for ‘election convenience’.
NPF Manipur unit Treasurer Leishiyo Keishing asserted that the root cause of the violent conflict that erupted between Kukis and Meiteis on May 3, 2023 and has now drawn in Nagas is the creation of Sadar Hills (Kangpokpi) district.
It was the demand for creation of Kangpokpi district that ignited the Naga-Kuki clash in 1992-93.
After the Congress Government created Sadar Hills (Kangpokpi) district without consulting, Kukis are now demanding separate administration. After some time, Kukis will step up their demand for an independent Nation, Leishiyo Keishing said.
He asserted that another major factor for the current crisis is the SoO agreement. It was the Congress party which saw seeds of the present crisis, Leishiyo said.
There are stories of Kukis coming to Manipur only in 1830’s-1840’s. Earlier, there was only one Kuki MLA but today there are ten, he added.
