MOIRANG, Jul 9: Representatives of several civil society organisations have extended the deadline for the Government to act on their long-pending demand for facilitating pilgrimage to indigenous religious sites till July 31 following assurances from Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam.
According to a release issued by AMAC Moirang, representatives of the Thangjing Ingu Phamnaiba Cheirap Loishang, Moirang Thangjing Seva Mandal, AMAC, IDM, Thangjing Pana, Kwakeithel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Apunba Manipur Ima, ANUL and Apunba Ima Kumbi met the Home Minister and MLA Thongam Shanti at the New Mini Secretariat on July 7 to discuss the issue.
The meeting came after the organisations had earlier issued an ultimatum, setting July 10 as the deadline for the Government to initiate concrete measures to facilitate pilgrimage to the ancient indigenous religious sites.
During the discussions, the Home Minister appealed to the delegation to allow the Government more time to make the necessary arrangements. He assured the representatives that the matter would be taken up with the Chief Minister and that sincere efforts would be made to initiate concrete steps towards a permanent and amicable resolution.
Following the meeting, the organisations agreed to extend their deadline till July 31, expressing hope that the Government would honour its assurance within the stipulated period.
However, they cautioned that if no concrete action is taken by the extended deadline, they would be compelled to launch various forms of democratic agitation with the support of the public.
