IMPHAL, Jul 11: An average Upper Primary Health Centre in Imphal has more doctors than all the CHC and PHCs combined in Ukhrul district, said PUYA general secretary Longjam Abothe today.
This finding was revealed after the People's United Youth Alliance (PUYA) and Foothills Naga Coordinating Committee (FNCC) conducted inspections at health centres across Ukhrul on July 9 and 10.
Speaking to reporters at PUYA office at Sagolband Thangapat Mapal, Longjam Abothe said Ukhrul has a District Hospital, one Community Health Centre (CHC) at Somdal, six Primary Health  Centres (PHCs) and eight Primary Health Sub-Centres (PHSCs).
Abothe said the inspection team found only one doctor, a Gynaecologist, at the Somdal Community Health Centre.
While four PHCs in Ukhrul have only one doctor each and an AYUSH doctor was found to be in-charge of one, there were no doctors in a PHC, Abothe said.
Interestingly, an X-Ray machine has been found lost without ever reaching the intended health centre, he said.
The X-Ray machine dispatched three years ago was supposed to be kept at the Somdal CHC. While it never reached the destination, the machine was allegedly brought to the office of the Ukhrul CMO.
With the Ukhrul CMO having no knowledge of the X-Ray, its whereabouts is not known now, he said.
Further, doctors whose transfers were ordered in May have not yet joined their place of posting in Ukhrul. The Ukhrul CMO is also learnt to have written to the Health Director in this regard, Abothe said.
Facing severe shortage of doctors and other staff, the health centres in Ukhrul are struggling to function properly and cater to the needs of the locals. The Government, the Directorate of Health and related authorities must send adequate doctors at the centres, Abothe said.
