IMPHAL, Jul 11
The Communist Party of India (CPI), Imphal West District Council, has demanded that the Manipur Government immediately declare the State as drought-hit and provide irrigation support to farmers facing acute water shortage.
In a district council meeting held today at Irawat Bhavan, Imphal, the party discussed the impact of deficient monsoon rains.
In a release, CPI said most districts, not only Imphal West, are facing drought-like conditions. Despite predictions of poor monsoon due to El Nino and less rainfall than normal till June, the Government has failed to ensure water for paddy fields.
Irrigation  has failed despite the Government spending crores. The Loktak Lift Irrigation and many minor dams have failed, the party said, cautioning the Government that farmers may launch agitation if it doesn't declare drought and take steps to provide irrigation water.
