IMPHAL, Jul 13 : Even as two persons have been arrested in connection with the abduction and killing of six Naga civilians by Kuki groups, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has said that more arrests are likely to be made within the next two days.
Govindas made the statement while handing over two ambulances equipped with freezer boxes to the Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA) and the State Police during a function held at the Manipur Secretariat complex at Mantripukhri, today.
Responding to media queries on the sidelines of the programme, the Minister said that security agencies have intensified operations to apprehend the remaining culprits involved in the abduction of 18 residents of Konsakhul from Leilon Vaiphei on May 13 and the subsequent killing of six of them.
The mutilated bodies of the six victims were recovered from Kharam Vaiphei village on June 10, a day after the United Naga Council (UNC) facilitated the safe release of Kuki hostages.
Replying to another query, Govindas said that 20 persons were initially detained in connection with the burning of six houses in the Leimakhong area on July 11 and of them, three have been arrested while the remaining detainees have been released.
Referring to the incident, the Minister said there has been widespread public outrage as the arson took place close to a military installation and despite the presence of heavy security.
He added that the Government has directed the Army and other security agencies to remain on high alert.
He further said that personnel of the CRPF and the State police have been deployed in the Leimakhong area in accordance with the decisions taken at a high-level security meeting chaired by the Chief Minister yesterday. Despite the Home Minister's assurances, tension continue to prevail in the cantonment town and adjoining areas after Kuki miscreants torched houses belonging to Meitei families at Kanto Sabal.
Meanwhile, Govindas lauded the Manipur Drivers' Association for launching the ambulance service in response to the increasing number of road accidents in the State.
He said the two ambulances flagged off today would serve Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.
Noting that similar services are already operational in Senapati and Tamenglong districts, he expressed hope that the association would gradually extend the service to the remaining districts as well.
MDA general secretary Sanjoy Kshetrimayum said the ambulances had been handed over to the district police as they are usually the first to receive information about road accidents.
He added that the ambulance service would be provided free of cost, with all maintenance expenses to be borne by the association. The programme was also attended by Tourism Minister Kh Loken, Home Commissioner Themthing Ngashangva, Bishnupur Superintendent of Police Ravikumar and Thoubal Superintendent of Police Manoj Prabhakar.
