IMPHAL, Jul 13: Strongly condemning the arson at Kanto Sabal near the Leimakhong Army Cantonment on July 11, the All Manipur Nupi Marup has demanded a high level inquiry against the 57 Mountain Division and 18 Punjab Regiment.
In a statement, the Nupi Marup said the arson by Kuki miscreants took place in broad daylight right under the nose of the Army and the personnel of the 18 Punjab Regiment deployed in the area.
It said the 57 Mountain Division failing to intervene timely and prevent the arson will remain a stain on the image of the Indian Army, whose conduct in Manipur amid the conflict has faced public scrutiny.
The Nupi Marup said the Leimakhong Army base is where Laishram Kamalbabu, a supervisor with the Military Engineering Services, went missing.
Instead of acting against those who set ablaze the houses, the Army fired tear gas shells and beat members of the public who were attempting to save the houses, asserted the Nupi Marup.
The Government must therefore initiate a high level inquiry against the 57 Mountain Division and the 18 Punjab Regiment and hold them accountable for their failure, said the All Manipur Nupi Marup.
