IMP/KPI, Jul 13 : Personnel of the CoBRA unit raided the residence of Kuki Zo Council (KZC) joint secretary Douminlal Haokip at Bongphajol village in Kangpokpi district, days after the Council had publicly admitted to the killing of six innocent Naga civilians who were abducted from Leilon Vaiphei on May 13 by Kuki-Zo groups.
KZC chairman Henlianthang Thanglet had, on June 25, stated, “Yes, I agree that the Kuki-Zo has made a great mistake by killing six ‘Kacha Naga’ civilians. It was done out of emotion. I really regret it.”
According to a statement issued by Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) and the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR), Sadar Hills Chapter, the operation took place at around 2.30 am on July 12, while Douminlal Haokip was away in Churachandpur attending a joint meeting of the KZC and the Kuki Inpi, Manipur.
They also claimed that the house was raided in the dead of the night without a search warrant.
It is, however, not known why the residence of the KZC leader was specifically raided by CoBRA, a specialised unit of the CRPF trained in jungle warfare, guerrilla tactics and counter-insurgency operations.
Condemning the midnight raid, the KZC alleged that security personnel entered and searched the residence without producing a search warrant while the family was asleep.
The KZC called on the authorities to explain the legal basis of the raid and institute an impartial inquiry into the conduct of the personnel involved.
KWOHR, also condemned the CoBRA unit over the alleged midnight search operation at the residence of KZC leader.
"No security operation, irrespective of its objective, should be carried out in a manner that intimidates innocent families or disregards their fundamental rights," KWOHR said.
Demanding immediate accountability, KWOHR urged the Government of India, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the CRPF to publicly explain the legal basis of the operation and order an independent, impartial, and time-bound inquiry into the conduct of the personnel involved.
