IMPHAL, Jul 14: Manipur State Council, CPI and the Indigenous People's Organisation Manipur (IPOM) have strongly condemned the arson at Kanto Sabal.
While IPOM called on the Centre and authorities concerned to launch an impartial inquiry into the incident, the MSC CPI said the Chief Minister and the Home Minister should resign on moral ground.
Six houses were burnt in broad daylight in a supposedly highly secure area near Leimakhong Army camp on July 11. However, unfortunately, the Chief Minister and the Home Minister have not been seen on the ground accessing the situation and meeting people whose houses were burnt, said Manipur State Council, CPI spokesperson RK Amusana at Irawat Bhawan today.
"The State Government seems to be existing in name only, and wasting time. The State Assembly's existence has no meaning at present." If the Chief Minister and Home Minister are unable to exert their power and do anything to safeguard Manipur, they should resign, Amusana said.
The CPI leader said people's frustration is growing against the Government and the Central security forces, whose lapses failed to prevent the arson.
The Indigenous People's Organisation, Manipur (IPOM), in a statement, said the Central security forces must be held accountable for the apparent security lapses which resulted in the burning of six houses.
The Central security forces' failure to prevent the arson has weakened public confidence.
The Central Government and the State Government must initiate a thorough, impartial, transparent and time-bound investigation into the incident. The security forces must be held accountable and every individual involved in the arson must be arrested and prosecuted, IPOM said.
Further, the State Government must deploy adequate State security forces in Kanto Sabal and other vulnerable areas in the fringes of the valley to restore public confidence and provide effective protection, IPOM said.
The State Government must also provide adequate compensation to the families whose houses have burnt and damaged, and ensure IDPs return to their homes, IPOM added.
