IMPHAL, Jul 15 : Manipur Commission of Protection of Child Right (MCPCR) has recommended the immediate recognition of Makhan relief camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
In a letter to Kangpokpi Deputy Commissioner, the Commission said that its Chairperson Keisam Pradip-kumar visited the camp on July 10 last and examined the condition there.
Saying that the camp established on the intervening night of May 14 and 15 presently shelters 173 IDPs from 62 families including 84 children, it added that the camp, however, remains excluded from regular Government relief and essential public services in the absence of formal recognition by the district administration.
Consequently, the displaced families at the camp continue to depend largely on community support while children face serious challenges in accessing education, healthcare, nutrition, child protection services and other basic entitlements, it added.
The Commission urged the district administration to examine the feasibility of relocation the inmates of Makhan relief camp to a safer and more suitable location such as the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University regional campus as prefered by the IDPs and subject to administrative feasibility.
In the interest of the IDPs, the Commission recommended that the district administration accord immediate formal recognition to the Makhan relief camp and ensure the provision of regular Government relief and essential services, including food, safe drinking water, health care, education, nutrition, child protection and mental health and psychological support.
Moreover, the MCPCR recommended that the district administration facilitate access to all eligible social protection measures, including benefits under Mission Vatsalya Sponsorship Scheme.
The Commission urged the Kangpokpi DC to take appropriate action on the recommendations and furnish an action taken report within 15 days.
