IMPHAL, Jul 1: The Eastern Command-Naga Village Guard (EC-NVG) has pointed its fingers at Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) for the attacks and arsons at Kongkan Thana (Huimin Thana) and Phaimol villages in Kamjong district today, while Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) have blamed NSCN (IM) for the arson at Phaimol.
According to a press release issued by EC-NVG, Phaimol, a Kuki village was advertently set on fire by Kuki militants in collusion with KNA-B to establish a basis for attacking and burning down two Tangkhul Naga settlements–– Kongkan Thana and Sangkalok.
As per eye witnesses, as many as 20 Kukis armed with sophisticated weapons crossed over the Namya River from Phaikoh village situated at Border Pillar 102 and launched a targeted offensive against the Naga settlements.
While the locals managed to flee from the site, several dwelling houses were burnt down to ashes.
The attacks on the Naga settlements occurred minutes after some abandoned houses at Phaimol village were deliberately set ablaze, it said.
The EC-NVG said that the armed aggression on the Naga settlements took place in the presence of Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, India Reserve Battalion and Police stationed at Kherongram, which is located adjacent to Kongkan Thana village.
The premeditated incident that took place at Phaimol on Wednesday was clearly orchestrated in a manner similar to the burning of Lanchah village prior to the cross-border violent attacks against the Tangkhul Naga villages— Z Choro, Wanglee and Namlee in Kamjong on the May 7, 2026, it said.
The EC-NVG has also called upon the Tangkhul Naga villagers residing along the international border to remain on high alert and stay vigilant against the habitual offensive nature of the Kukis.
The beleaguered Kukis, after their unceremonious exit from Imphal valley in 2023, have been attempting to establish territorial domination by usurping the Nagas, who are their ancestral landowners, in the hills of Manipur, it added.
Meanwhile, KIM and CoTU have vehemently condemned the burning of Phaimol village, alleging that armed cadres of the NSCN (IM) were behind the attack.
The Kuki bodies termed the incident as a sustained campaign of targeting Kuki villages in the hill districts of the State and demanded immediate intervention by the Centre and the Manipur Government.
KIM has also expressed serious concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident, claiming that the village had been under the protection of the Assam Rifles and that security personnel had vacated the post just a day before the arson.
It said the timing had raised "serious concerns" over the existing security arrangements and called for an immediate, transparent inquiry into the circumstances that allegedly enabled the attack.
