IMPHAL, Jul 2: A large unruly Kuki mob from Leilon Vaiphei came down up to the Meitei village of Kanto Sabal in Imphal West district under Sekmai police station this evening.
As the Kukis marched up to the Meitei village, tension escalated rapidly in the area.
The unruly Kuki mob were just 100 metres away from reaching Kanto Sabal when they were stopped by a large number of security personnel.
Even as the unruly Kuki mob tried to enter Kanto Sabal, the security forces forced them to turn back.
Although the Kuki mob have turned back, a tense situation has gripped the area, sources said.
Earlier in the day, around 150 Kukis were taking out a rally around Leimakhong demanding free movement of goods along Pheidinga-Leimakhong road.
On learning that the Kukis were taking out a rally, hundreds of people gathered at Kanto Sabal.
But there was no report of untoward incident or confrontation between the two sides.
On the other hand, a tense situation has gripped Kanglatongbi area following reports that security forces will be using excessive force to neutralise the ongoing economic blockade on NH-2 at Kanglatongbi-Namdilong area.
Several organisations have been imposing an economic blockade at Namdilong demanding justice for the killing of six Naga civilians and the blockade has been disrupting the movement of essential commodities along NH-2. At Namdilong, protesters blocked passage of goods-laden vehicles, restricting the supply of essential items and affecting normal transportation along the highway. Meanwhile, several Meira Paibi groups and women leaders have questioned the Government's inaction over the killing of the six Naga civilians.
They have urged the authorities to address the issue and see that justice is done without any further delay.
Meanwhile, a few trucks carrying bitumen purportedly bound for Kangpokpi and Churachandpur have been blocked by ‘volunteers’ at Noney along Imphal-Jiribam highway.
