IMPHAL, Jul 2: The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) has flagged shortage of teachers and infrastructure at two higher secondary schools in Thoubal districts.
The MSF said this after conducting inspections at the Lalit Madhop Sharma Higher Secondary School in Khongjom and the Sekmai Khumbi Higher Secondary School at Nongpok Sekmai in Thoubal district.
The two schools have been upgraded to Higher Secondary level from High School status, but have no Principals. These higher secondary schools are being run by Headmaster/Headmistress, said the MSF in a statement.
The schools also have no adequate higher secondary level teachers. Primary level teachers have been found teaching higher secondary level students, said the MSF.
The MSF said the Lalit Madhop Sharma Higher Secondary School has four hired teachers, and has only 15 students.
While Sekmai Khumbi Higher Secondary School has 24 hired teachers, the MSF said it found four Primary level teachers teaching Class XI and Class XII students at the school.
Even though they used to teach higher secondary level students before joining Government service as Primary level teachers, the four conducting higher secondary classes at the school is beyond the rules, MSF said.
Upgrading a high school to higher secondary status without providing adequate corresponding teachers defeats the whole purpose of upgrading  the school in the first place. Do schools have to wait for a "Oja Mapung Phana Leihansi Mission" to provide them adequate teachers? MSF asked. The Government may launch missions to improve schools, but the educational landscape in Manipur will not improve without adequate manpower and infrastructure, it added.
The MSF urged the Government and the Education Department to look into the issues and needs of its schools and take immediate corrective measures.
