Missing woman identified after remains recovery

Imphal, Jul 2 : The skeletal remains of a woman found hanging from a tree at Khurkhul Singjapokpi under Sekmai police station in Imphal West district has been identified as those of Thokchom ongbi Anjali (24).
According to police, information was received yesterday afternoon that the skeletonised remains of a woman were found hanging from a tree at Khurkhul Singjapokpi.
Acting on the information, a team of Sekmai police rushed to the spot, brought down the body, and conducted an inquest of the remains and the surrounding area with the assistance of the State Forensic Science Unit.
During the inquest, the police recovered a handbag, suspected to belong to the deceased, from a nearby location.
Following the inquest, the body was shifted to the RIMS morgue for identification and post-mortem examination.
During the course of the investigation, police examined the handbag and recovered a mobile phone, which helped establish the identity of the deceased as Thokchom ongbi Anjali (24) of Khurkhul, who was married to Thokchom Herojit (27) of Pangaltabi in Kakching district.
Police further learned that Anjali's family had lodged a missing person report at Sugnu police station about a month ago.
The post-mortem examination of the skeletonised remains was conducted today in the presence of a Duty Magistrate, with the entire procedure videographed.
After completion of the legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family members for the last rites. Sekmai police have registered an unnatural death (UD) case.
