IMPHAL, Jul 19: An election petition filed against MLA Karam Shyam of Langthabal AC has been disposed of by the High Court of Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at his residence at Lilong Chajing Mairenkhong today, Karam Shyam has hailed the High Court’s verdict passed by Chief Justice M Sundar on July 14, 2026.
The election petition was filed by Congress candidate Okram Joy in April 2022.
Karam Shyam responded by filing an election recrimination petition.
The High Court heard the two petitions and reserved its judgement but it was announced on July 14 whereby the petition filed by Okram Joy was disposed of.
Karam Shyam said that the election petition was filed based on the allegation that false information was given in the affidavit he submitted to the Returning Officer.
“The petition made two contentions. The first contention is that my educational qualification was given as Bachelor of Textiles Engineering instead of Bachelor of Textiles Technology. The second contention being I did not mention non-agricultural land against my homestead”, Shyam said.
The same petition also made 12 other contentions but they were dismissed by the Court earlier, he said.
With regard to his educational qualification, Shyam said that the All India Council of Technical Education had issued a notification and the same had been published in the gazette clarifying that Bachelor of Textiles Engineering and Bachelor of Textiles Technology are equivalent.
In Manipur, the term ‘non-agricultural land’ is not used. So the term Ingkhol (homestead land) is enough, he said.
The Court disposed of the petition based on these facts, the MLA added.
