Dialysis patients urge Govt to clear dues

IMPHAL, Jul 19 : With private hospitals preparing to suspend treatment under PMJAY and CMHT from the first week of August due to unpaid dues, the Manipur Dialysis Patients' Association (MDPA) has appealed to the Government to clear the outstanding payments, saying the disruption could jeopardize the lives of patients who rely on the schemes for essential treatment.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, MDPA executive member Chongtham Lakshmi said the suspension of services under the health cards would primarily affect kidney and cancer patients.
She said kidney patients who depend on regular dialysis would face an uncertain future if private hospitals stop accepting CMHT and PMJAY cards.
Many kidney patients require dialysis three or four times a week, with each session costing around Rs 5,000, she said, adding that many patients are able to survive because of the financial support provided under the CMHT and PMJAY schemes.
She further said that the annual coverage of Rs 5 lakh provided under the Government health insurance schemes is often insufficient to meet the total cost of dialysis, forcing many families to sell their properties to continue treatment.
Lakshmi also said they have sought appointments with the Governor and the Chief Minister to discuss the issue, but have not yet received a response.
She added that many patients may not survive for long if the benefits under the CMHT and PMJAY health schemes are suspended.
She urged the Government to either clear the pending dues or reach an agreement with the private hospitals to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of CMHT and PMJAY health card services.
