Concern over electoral process raised before ECI

SENAPATI, Jul 19 : A delegate from Manipur raised concerns over the electoral process in the conflict-hit State during the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) first All India Media Conference 2026, held at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi on Friday.
Organised under the theme “Connecting Stakeholders, Strengthening Democracy: Role of Media in Elections,” the conference brought together more than 380 media professionals from States and Union Territories across the country, including nine delegates from Manipur.
During the interactive session with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Manipur delegate highlighted concerns arising from the State’s prolonged conflict, the displacement of thousands of people, ongoing public apprehensions over the Census and electoral rolls, demands for the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the deletion of around 1.58 lakh names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The delegate questioned how the Election Commission could expect the people of Manipur to have confidence in the electoral process when concerns over the prolonged conflict, displacement, Census, electoral rolls, demands related to the NRC, and the deletion of around 1.58 lakh names during the SIR remained unresolved.
The delegate also sought an assurance that the upcoming election would genuinely reflect the will of the legitimate electorate.
Responding to the query, the CEC said, “The elections that you will have, and as far as trust is concerned, you are not the repository of trust. The entire electorate of Manipur will participate in these elections. We are so sure about that.”
The event was aimed at promoting a better understanding of India’s electoral process, covering electoral roll preparation, polling and counting procedures, transparency measures, the use of technology in elections, and the role of stakeholders in ensuring free and fair polls.
