ZSOM urges repair of Tml–Tousem Rd

Tml , Jul 19 : The Zeme Students' Organisation Manipur (ZSOM) has made an urgent appeal to the Government to swiftly reconstruct the Tamenglong–Tousem Road.
The Tamenglong–Tousem Road is the lifeline of the people of the region. The deteriorating condition of the road has inconvenienced the people, and affected their daily life and livelihood, said ZSOM president Raninglung Newme.
As the only road linking Tousem with the Tamenglong District Headquarters, it provides vital access to healthcare, educational institutions, Government offices, banking services, and economic activities.
The deplorable condition of the road has however affected normal traffic. The situation has worsened during the monsoon season, Newme said.
While maintenance work is being undertaken by the agencies including the Zandu Company and KCC Company, the work remains largely superficial and insufficient to address the underlying problems, Newme alleged.
"Occasional clearing and patchwork cannot be a sustainable solution to the hardships being faced by commuters," he said.
Sludges at several stretches of the road have caused great inconvenience with vehicles including ambulances getting stuck and stranded for hours. Patients requiring emergency medical care, students travelling for examinations and going to schools, elderly citizens, women, and children are among the worst affected, Newme said.
The locals, commuters and transporters are not only facing physical hardship but also incurring financial losses and suffering psychological distress, Newme added.
Neglected by the authorities concerned, locals have on many occasions taken it upon themselves to carry out temporary repairs using spades and shovels. While these voluntary efforts demonstrate the resilience and unity of the public, it also highlights the Government's failure to provide essential public infrastructure, Newme said.
"The Tamenglong–Tousem Road has become a road only in name. It no longer serves the purpose for which it was constructed. Every journey has become a struggle for survival. It is unacceptable that, in this modern era, our people continue to endure such inhumane conditions simply because of poor road connectivity," Newme said.
Newme urged the Government, departments concerned and all responsible authorities to recognise the seriousness of the situation and take immediate steps to repair and reconstruct the road. He urged the Government to sanction adequate funds, deploy necessary machinery and engineering teams, and commence the road reconstruction work without further delay.
Continuous neglect, he said, will only widen the developmental gap and further isolate the people of the Tousem area, he said, also calling on elected representatives, public leaders, and all stakeholders to rise above political differences and resolve the long-standing issue.
