JAC resolves to intensify stir

IMPHAL, Jul 22 : The Joint Administrative Council (JAC) of the All Manipur Trade Unions’ Council (AMTUC) and All Manipur Government Employees’ Organisation (AMGEO) has resolved to intensify its cease-work strike if the Government fails to address its charter of demands.
The decision was taken during a meeting held at the JAC office at Babupara today.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, JAC president Rajkumar Basumani said the ongoing protest does not include employees from the healthcare and education sectors.
However, he added that employees from these sectors would also wear black badges from tomorrow in support of the agitation.
Saying that one of their demands is to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 years, he clarified that the claim by some organisations that such a move would reduce employment opportunities for youths is incorrect.
He also said that around 50,000 posts are lying vacant in various Government Departments and that the upper age limit for appearing in Government recruitment examinations has been extended by two years recently.
The existing employees have been handling the workload of the vacant posts, he said and added that they have been urging the Government to fill the vacant posts.
He also said that the Government has not released pensions amounting to Rs 550 crore for retired employees and urged the authorities to clear the pending dues.
Meanwhile, the Trained Nurses' Association of India Manipur State Branch and the Association for Non-Teaching Staff at JNIMS have demanded the Government to implement the demands being made by the Government employees.
Speaking to reporters at the JNIMS premises, TNAI Manipur State Branch general secretary Loukrakpam Sanjarani said the employees at the hospital had refrained from taking part in the cease work strike considering the impacts such a stir could have on the patients.
The TNAI Manipur State Branch and the Association for Non-Teaching Staff fully agree with the demands and endorse them. The demands being raised are genuine and legitimate, and the Government should implement them at the earliest, Sanjarani said.
