SETCOCOM terms Chatric Bailey Bridge demolition a direct threat to human lives

UKHRUL, Jul 25: The South-East Tangkhul Co-ordination Committee (SETCOCOM) has strongly condemned the demolition of the Bailey Bridge over the Chatric River, terming the incident a direct threat to human lives and the welfare of thousands of villagers.
In a press statement, SETCOCOM said the bridge was destroyed using a powerful bomb in the wee hours of July 21, 2026, describing the act as cowardly and an evil act. It said the demolition had severed a vital lifeline for thousands of villagers residing in Sahamphung block of Kamjong district.
The committee said the bridge was not merely a structure of iron and wood but an essential link for children to reach schools, patients to access healthcare, farmers to transport their produce to markets and families to remain connected.
SETCOCOM expressed deep concern that elements acting with disregard for human life had targeted civilian infrastructure, stating that such acts would only bring hardship and suffering to the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society.
The committee termed the incident a direct attack on the welfare of the entire South-East Tangkhul community and urged the authorities concerned to immediately investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
It also demanded that the bridge be restored on a war footing to prevent further isolation of villages and called for enhanced security of vital public infrastructure in the area.
SETCOCOM also appealed to all peace-loving citizens to stand united against anti-social elements seeking to destabilise the region. It said the people of South-East Tangkhul had endured enough and would not remain silent when their lifelines were cut off from the rest of the district.
The committee expressed solidarity with all affected villagers and assured that it would pursue the matter with the highest authorities until justice is delivered and the bridge rebuilt.
