Speaker asks Govt to think of people's restricted mobility

IMPHAL, Jul 26: In a rare admission by an elected Member of the BJP since violent conflict broke out in Manipur in May 2023, Speaker Th Satyabrata has said that the Meiteis are "unable to move beyond Sekmai in the north and Kakching Lamkhai in the south."
"Manipur, at present, is in an unpleasant situation. People [Meiteis] are unable to move beyond Sekmai in the north and Kakching Lam-khai in the south. The State Government and the Central Government must look into this and bring about a solution to ease the suffering of the people," Satyabrata said.
The Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly said this launching a social service cum tree plantation programme, organised by Better Yaiskul, at Bheigyabati Leikai community hall.
"The irony is people are unable to go on a drive even when they have expensive vehicles. People don't want to buy vehicles anymore," Satyabrata said, hinting that the Meiteis are unable to travel on the highways beyond certain places.
To bring about development in Manipur, Satyabrata said students should look beyond medical and engineering professions, and join politics and administrative services.
People should cultivate good work culture. Perseverance, discipline and understanding the value of time are crucial in every work. It is okay to fail while trying, he said.
"We Meiteis look for the easiest way to earn money, and like to spend money carelessly on things that are not so important. Parents should do away with the habit of taking out a Rs 1 lakh loan and buying expensive phones for their children," he said.
When taking loans, people should invest the money wisely, and also reap the benefits of many Government schemes, he added.
Keirao AC MLA Lourembam Rameshwor also echoed the similar concern and said that the Meiteis and Meitei Pangals are allowed to settle only in 8 percent of the total geographical area of Manipur.
Unable to travel on the highways, people are being forced to buy expensive flight tickets to travel outside Manipur, he added.
"If we are not careful, Manipuris may vanish from Manipur like Tripuris in Tripura," the MLA said.
