JFD warns of strong agitation from Aug 7

IMPHAL, Jul 26: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has urged the State Government to take a concrete resolution on the demand to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the context of Manipur before proceeding with the census operation and make its decision public before August 6.
Today, JFD held a meeting with representatives of various civil society organisations at the Manipur Press Club to discuss issues surrounding the upcoming census exercise.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that the Government has made all preparations to begin the census exercise from August 17.
However, he said the Government has not responded to JFD’s demand to conduct the census after updating the NRC, despite the organisation submitting several memorandums to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Registrar General of India and the Chief Minister.
Saying that the Government’s approach has made the people of Manipur restless, he urged the State Government and all its departments to take a decision to identify illegal immigrants before carrying out the population count.
He warned that failure to do so would prompt them to launch strong agitation from August 7.
Jeetendra also urged local clubs and Meira Paibi groups to organise street-corner meetings and protest demonstrations, and also submit memorandums to their respective MLAs in support of the cause.
Moreover, he urged the MPs of the State to raise the  issue during the Parliament session.
